Ground-mounted solar synchronized with diesel generators on a grid that could not be relied on.
SENEGAL, AFRICA
Gravita India Limited took SolarMaxx overseas for a second time, this time to a recycling operation in Senegal, Africa. The pattern was familiar from Ghana but the site was new, and the same underlying question applied: not what electricity costs, but whether the supply would hold steady long enough to run a plant on.
Power quality was the first problem. The local grid brought voltage fluctuations and frequency variations, and poor power quality left inverters exposed to surges and transients. Those conditions do their damage slowly, shortening equipment life rather than causing an obvious failure, so anything installed here had to be protected rather than simply connected.
The site contributed its own wear. Recycling work throws off dust and metal particulate that settles on every surface, modules included, and the local climate brought high temperatures, heavy rainfall, and rainy seasons that could not be forecast with any confidence. A plant built here had to keep producing through all of it.
Delivery was the harder constraint. This was an overseas project executed on the ground by a local team, and it had to hold EPC quality standards using a local workforce, which meant supervising and training Senegalese labour to the standard SolarMaxx applies at home, from another continent. Logistics tightened the schedule further: the complete solar power pack system had to be exported, which stretched project lead times.
So the brief ran past the technical design. Build a plant that survives a weak grid and an abrasive site, deliver it through a workforce being trained as the work proceeded, and leave it supervisable from thousands of kilometres away.
SolarMaxx designed for availability first. On a site where the grid is unreliable and senior engineering support sits in another country, what the plant is worth depends on how rarely it stops and how quickly anyone can tell that something has gone wrong.
The system was built around intelligent DG-PV synchronization, so solar and the site's diesel generators operate as one stable supply instead of competing for the load. When grid conditions move, the plant stays up rather than dropping out.
A real-time zero export control was added through a zero export device, keeping generated power in the plant's own consumption instead of pushing it back out. That maximizes self-consumption and keeps the installation compliant on the utility side.
The hardware was specified for the environment it had to live in. This is a ground-mounted plant using Longi 585Wp modules with Sungrow inverters on a hot-dip galvanized GI module mounting structure, chosen to hold up against particulate, heat, and heavy rain rather than degrade under them. Real-time monitoring and protection systems were built in, giving high plant availability, reduced downtime, and remote supervision from India.
On execution, the local workforce was supervised and trained through the build so EPC quality standards held on a site delivered by a team new to this kind of work. SolarMaxx handled the DG-PV synchronization work and the zero export mechanism.
From site assessment to commissioning took about three to four months.
The 300 kW plant generates about 840 units of power a day, saves close to Rs. 24.5 lakh a year, and offsets about 374 tonnes of CO2.
This was SolarMaxx's second overseas project, and it matters for a different reason than the first. Ghana proved the engineering and quality process could travel; Senegal shows it can be repeated on a new site, with a new local workforce, under the same unforgiving mix of weak grid, abrasive dust, and unpredictable weather. The plant runs stably alongside diesel generation and is supervised remotely from India.
